US President Donald Trump chose earlier this fall to deploy state military forces in Portland with the alleged purpose of maintaining law and order.
The president's decision has been taken to court several times - where it has been both green and red. During the night of Saturday, Swedish time, a federal judge ruled that the deployment is "unlawful" and ordered that it be permanently stopped.
The US government has sent the National Guard to several cities governed by Democrats this year.
Tonight's decision represents a legal setback for Trump and is expected to have consequences for how the president can use the National Guard in other American cities.
The court decision can be appealed, NBC reports.
