Judge James Boasberg called for an immediate but temporary halt to the deportation of individuals from Venezuela who were in the USA. President Donald Trump justified the expulsion with an obscure war law from 1798.

At the same time as Boasberg issued the order to stop the deportations, over 200 suspected gang criminals were on board a plane bound for El Salvador. Despite the order, the flight was completed.

Since then, the efforts have increased in the game around the legal issues. Boasberg wrote in a submission that the government has "opposed with intent or negligence" the court order that he issued.

The government has the opportunity to rectify what has happened, and return the prisoners to the USA and give them the right to appeal the decision. The alternative, according to the judge, is that the Trump government risks being convicted of contempt of court.

The White House responded almost immediately to appeal the decision, according to communications director Steven Cheung. He referred to the fact that the deported individuals posed a security threat to the USA.
