The con artist Sawyer was a deceiver who wanted to atone for his past and got to show a softer side as the classic 00s series "Lost" progressed. In new "Duster", Josh Holloway plays a deceiver who atones for his past and gets to show an increasingly softer side as the series progresses.

Yes! I don't know what it is about me that makes me keep getting these kinds of roles. Maybe I need to cut my hair or become an honest person, he says and laughs.

Undercover

"Duster" takes place in Arizona in the early 1970s and Josh Holloway's character Jim is a small-time crook who secretly starts working for a female FBI agent to take down a gang leader.

Sawyer came from a really dark place and moved towards the light. Jim is a person with a lighter mind, but he grew up in the mafia and has family loyalty, but he's working for the authorities because he suspects they were responsible for his brother's death, explains Holloway.

"Duster" is created by JJ Abrams and LaToya Morgan as a tribute to the 1970s – and the decade's classic detective series; "Columbo", "Rockford takes over" and "Kojak". It's flared pants, big hairdos, a lot of smoking – and absolutely no mobile phones.

Sex appeal

For the actors, the time travel to the 1970s was an eye-opening experience. Especially when it came to the tight clothes.

I was surprised by the sex appeal... It was a very sexy time. When you put on the clothes, you really had to WEAR the clothes, says Holloway and laughs.

It was an era when you really had to show off. You had to show a lot of skin and I had to add a "swagger", a special cocky walk they had back then.

But there's also another background to "Duster". The series' female lead Nina, played by Rachel Hilson, is inspired by the first black female FBI agent, Sylvia Mathis', life story.

Black women got to work as agents for the FBI in 1976 and Mathis was an important pioneer in the American civil rights movement.

I'm a big fan of putting a little medicine in the milkshake, coming with an important history lesson to the entertainment. So you can absolutely enjoy the series and learn something from it too, says LaToya Morgan.

"Duster" premieres on Max on May 16.

The science fiction drama "Lost" was broadcast on TV4 between 2004 and 2010 and still attracts a large audience on streaming services.

JJ Abrams created the series together with Damon Lindelof. Since then, Abrams has, among other things, directed two "Star Wars" films and "Mission: Impossible III".

"Duster" is the first time Josh Holloway and JJ Abrams collaborate since "Lost". Since then, Holloway has, among other things, participated in the TV series "Colony" and "Yellowstone".
