The Peruvian parliament has appointed leftist politician José María Balcázar as the country's new interim president after the previous president was ousted earlier this week.

Conservative José Jerí was forced from office on Tuesday in an impeachment trial, following allegations of corruption and other misconduct.

It is now clear that 83-year-old José María Balcázar will succeed him until a new president is elected in April next year.

Balcázar will become the country's eighth president since 2016.
