Last week, Jönsson left the coaching position in SHL rival Växjö, after being eliminated in the SM quarterfinals against Luleå. Now, he replaces Tomas Mitell, who in turn stepped down as Färjestad's coach after the team was eliminated by Skellefteå in the quarterfinals.

I'm nervous and proud and happy to be sitting here today. It's a fantastic opportunity for me to come back to a club I feel strongly about, says Jönsson at Monday's press conference.

Jörgen Jönsson already has iconic status in hockey town Karlstad. During his active career, he won five SM gold medals with FBK and his jersey, number 21, is hoisted in the ceiling of Löfbergs arena. He added another gold with Färjestad in 2011, then as assistant coach.

The house in Karlstad has been kept by the family since his time in the club and Jörgen Jönsson's wife has lived there all the time. Now, he himself avoids commuting.

The contract is written for four years. We both strive for long-term commitment. It feels very good to get that continuity over time, says Färjestad's sports director Rickard Wallin.

The last three seasons, Jönsson has had the main responsibility in Växjö, which he led to SM gold in 2023.
