The film is based on Rasmus Lindgren's novel "The Unwanted" and in the lead role is seen the four-time Oscar-nominated Irish actress Saoirse Ronan.
"Bad apples" is a satirical comedy with thriller elements where Saoirse Ronan plays the elementary school teacher Maria, who struggles to inspire her class - but is hindered by a rowdy student. When both Maria's career and the student's future are at stake, she makes a number of bad choices that lead to the student being accidentally locked in Maria's basement.
"I am very proud that the film is premiering in Toronto. It is a dark comedy about how a well-meaning system, in its pursuit of control, can make us cross our own moral boundaries", says Jonatan Etzler in a press release.
"Bad apples" is Etzler's second feature film, he made his feature film debut with the Netflix comedy "One more time" in 2023.
The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is one of the world's most prestigious film festivals, and often the first stage for winners at the upcoming Oscars gala. This year's festival takes place from 4-14 September.
