On Sunday evening, his team, Team Visma, issued a press release stating that Vingegaard had broken his collarbone and needed surgery.
The 29-year-old Dane, who was in second place overall, fell hard on a bend and landed on one shoulder.
Vingegaard's crash came just hours after he and leader Tadej Pogacar, along with several other cyclists, were woken up in their hotels during the night by anti-doping controllers. The Dane was woken up at 2 a.m.
"At first I thought they weren't allowed to do that, but apparently it's allowed according to the rules. It's good that they test us, but when it affects performance, it's no longer good," Vingegaard told Danish TV 2 ahead of Sunday's mountain stage.
Vingegaard has won the Tour de France twice.
