The incident occurred during a match between Gjerpen and Camilla Herrem's team Sola in the Norwegian top flight earlier in October. Herrem was greeted with flowers, while the announcer said:
It's easy to style your hair, you don't even need a hairdryer.
The speaker and Gjerpen have apologized, and both Sola and Herrem have accepted the apology. But the speaker is now being fired, Gjerpen announces on its website.
It was a very unfortunate comment. We raised it with Gjerpen that evening, and they took care of it and apologized. For us, the matter is out of character, said Sola coach Steffen Stegavik, who is also Herrem's husband, according to NTB.
39-year-old Herrem announced in June that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Since then, she has undergone a series of chemotherapy treatments, but was able to make a comeback on the field in August.
Herrem is one of the most successful handball players of all time. She has played over 300 international matches and her track record includes two Olympic gold medals, three World Cup gold medals and six European Championship gold medals.
