John Mellberg, 18, has been afflicted with a knee injury, writes his club RB Salzburg on their website. The defender is expected to be out for three months, which means he will likely miss Sweden's World Championship qualifying matches in September and October.
Mellberg was selected for the A-national team's gathering in June where they played friendly matches against Hungary (2–0) and Algeria (4–3), but did not make his debut. He has previously played one match in the U21 national team on his merit list.
Sweden has Kosovo, Switzerland and Slovenia in their World Championship qualifying group and begins away against Slovenia on September 5.
