In a first statement since the indictment was announced, John Bolton describes himself as a victim of Trump's use of the Department of Justice.
"I look forward to fighting to defend my legal actions and exposing his abuse of power", John Bolton writes about the president.
According to CNN, Bolton is expected to, possibly as early as Friday, turn himself in to the authorities in the state of Maryland.
The indictment comes after the FBI carried out a dawn raid against the Republican veteran last summer. According to CNN's information, he is suspected of having shared classified material with family members via email.
Bolton has in recent years profiled himself as a vocal critic of Donald Trump. Among other things, he has called Trump "unfit" as president in a book he wrote after being fired from his position as national security adviser, and he has regularly criticized Trump's foreign policy.
Trump, on his part, has accused Bolton of revealing state secrets in the same book, but attempts to stop the book have failed.
Trump has taken action against Bolton by revoking his security clearance and withdrawing his personal protection.
Earlier in October, Letitia James, known as the prosecutor who succeeded in achieving a conviction for fraud against Trump – which followed an indictment against the former FBI chief James Comey, was indicted. Trump and his administration are accused of vendetta against political opponents, among others by the Democrats in the US Congress.
