The past cross-country skiing season saw the former dominant Therese Johaug, who has taken several Olympic Games and World Championship gold medals and numerous World Cup victories, make a comeback after becoming a mother and being away from the sport for two years.
The 36-year-old's first season since 2021-2022 ended, however, without any gold at the home World Championship in Trondheim. The Norwegian had to settle for three silver and one bronze. Now she is considering whether she wants to extend her comeback over the Olympic Games in Milano and Cortina next year.
In her situation, things have gone awry in many ways since before the season. When she first got a little peace during Easter and landed a bit, I think different reactions emerged, which means she needs a bit more time, says national team coach Pål Gunnar Mikkelsplass, previously also Johaug's personal coach.
On Monday, Johaug was selected by the Norwegian federation for the World Cup team for next season, provided she gets time to think about whether she wants to participate. It is not known how long she will deliberate.
