The old record was 14:34.27, but Johansson swam in 14:23.98 on Wednesday. The 27-year-old already held the Swedish record and thus lowered his own record time.
With a time of 14:23.98, Johansson won his heat, and was second fastest of all in the trials. The fastest was Zalán Sárkány from Hungary, who swam three hundredths faster than Johansson.
On Thursday, Johansson will swim for the medals in the 1,500 meter final.
The swimmer from Nässjö also set a new Swedish record on Tuesday when he swam the 400-meter freestyle in 3:37.73 in the trials, improving his own record by 1.6 seconds. In the final, Johansson swam in 3:37.92, which was enough for fifth place.
