This is the letter where US President Joe Biden announces that he will not stand for re-election:

"Dear Americans,

Over the past three and a half years, we have made great progress as a nation.

Today, the USA has the strongest economy in the world. We have made historic investments in rebuilding our country, in reducing the cost of prescription drugs for seniors, and in providing affordable healthcare to a record number of Americans. We have provided urgent care to one million veterans exposed to toxic substances. We have passed the first gun control law in 30 years. We have appointed the first African American woman to the Supreme Court. And we have passed the most significant climate legislation in world history. The USA has never been in a better position to lead than we are today.

I know that none of this could have been achieved without you, the American people. Together, we got through a kind of pandemic that only occurs once a century, as well as the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We have protected and upheld our democracy. And we have breathed new life into and strengthened our alliances around the world.

It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your president. I had intended to try to be re-elected, but I believe it is in the interest of my party and the country for me to step aside and focus fully on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term.

I will speak to the nation later this week to provide more details about my decision.

For now, I want to express my deepest gratitude to all those who have worked so hard to get me re-elected. I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an extraordinary partner throughout all my work. And let me express my heartfelt appreciation for the trust and confidence that the American people have shown me.

I continue to believe what I have always believed: That the USA can achieve anything – when we do it together. We just need to remember that we are the United States of America.

Joe Biden"
