The reviews in trade magazines have mostly been overwhelming, and the press conference for the film was fully booked, which is not common when it comes to Scandinavian film. After the premiere, the film received a 19-minute standing ovation.
When director Joachim Trier and his actors meet the press, it's a cheerful but tired and worn-out gang.
This time, I and my co-screenwriter Eskil Vogt wanted to make a film about relationships, about how there can be a lack of communication within a family, says Joachim Trier.
The film is about the previously successful director Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård) whose ex-wife has just passed away. He has had no contact with his daughters for many years.
"Want to surprise"
Now Gustav has written a film script that can be his comeback, and he wants his daughter Nora to play the lead role in it.
I felt that Joachim could find something in me that other directors can't, says Stellan Skarsgård.
When asked if he brought anything from previous roles he did, he answers:
Filmmaking can be so momentary, where you capture the moment. It's life, it's when a film comes to life. Those moments when you surprise yourself, that's the best, says Stellan Skarsgård.
I love being on a film set and working with others. If the film does well or not, I don't care, he continues.
The daughter Nora is played by Renate Reinsve, who had her breakthrough with Joachim Trier's "The Worst Person in the World".
Insight into human psychology
Nora rejects her father's offer, not least because the script is based on Gustav's mother's story. So Gustav engages an American star who comes to Oslo – no more will be said here.
This film has an emotional richness that is handled with care. It's such an insight into human psychology. It was an easy and fun shoot, says Renate Reinsve.
The American actress is played by Elle Fanning. She says she has dreamed of working with Trier since "The Worst Person in the World".
Suddenly, this script came down, I immediately felt that I wanted to make the film. We met on Zoom and I asked him to choose me, says Elle Fanning.
Joachim Trier's previous film "The Worst Person in the World" was nominated for two Oscars, for Best International Film and for Best Original Screenplay.
