The newly crowned champion of the French Championships was seen as one of the favorites to win Wimbledon.

But second-seeded Coco Gauff lost her opening match to Ukrainian Dajana Jastremska in two straight sets – 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 – and Gauff has thus played out on the grass in London.

Jastremska is ranked 42nd in the world.

It was a good match, I was “on fire”. Playing against Coco is special, she is a fantastic player and person, we have a very good relationship. This court is made for the best players and I am very grateful to get to play here, says Jastremska.

Also, Gauff's compatriot and world third Jessica Pegula's Wimbledon adventure ended already in the first round. 0–2 in sets (2–6, 3–6) against 116-ranked Elisabetta Cocciaretto meant that the American made her worst result in the classic tournament since 2019.

Pegula won the WTA tournament in Bad Homburg as recently as on Saturday after beating world fourth Iga Swiatek in two straight sets in the final.

Fifth-seeded Zheng Qinwen's tournament also stopped after the first match.

The Chinese, who took Olympic Games gold in singles in Paris, lost to Czech Katerina Siniaková, ranked 81 in singles. Siniaková, who is however ranked first in doubles, won with 2–1 in sets (7–5, 4–6, 6–1).

Mirra Andrejeva and Iga Swiatek – seeded seventh and eighth respectively – are on the other hand advancing, after both winning easily in two straight sets.
