Jessica Pegula's Wimbledon adventure ended already in the first round. 0–2 in sets (2–6, 3–6) against 116th-ranked Elisabetta Cocciaretto meant that the American was responsible for her worst result in the classic tournament since 2019.
Pegula won the WTA tournament in Bad Homburg as recently as on Saturday after beating world fourth Iga Swiatek in two straight sets in the final.
Also, fifth-seeded Zheng Qinwen's Wimbledon came to a stop after the first match.
The Chinese, who took Olympic Games gold in singles in Paris, lost to the Czech Katerina Siniaková, ranked 81 in singles. Siniaková, who is however ranked first in doubles, won with 2–1 in sets (7–5, 4–6, 6–1).
Mirra Andrejeva and Iga Swiatek – seeded as seventh and eighth respectively – are on the other hand continuing, after both winning easily in two straight sets.
