Jessica Meir and three colleagues are now in orbit, heading to the International Space Station (ISS). This is the Swedish-American astronaut's second spaceflight.

Jessica Meir and the expedition known as Crew-12 lifted off on Friday at 11:15, Swedish time, from Florida.

In NASA's live broadcast, she thanked, among others, the rocket operator SpaceX and the NASA team.

We have left the Earth, but the Earth has not left us. When we look down at the planet, it immediately becomes clear that everything is interconnected, Jessica Meir said.

We hope that our arrival in space can remind everyone that dreams can indeed come true.

Friday is the first day of their eight-month journey. On the ISS, they will conduct experiments that will help humans get to Mars.

The docking with the ISS is not expected to take place until Saturday evening Swedish time.
