When the final award of the evening was presented, there was a huge cheer at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The Apple TV series “Widow's Bay” took home a 14th statuette for best comedy series.

Earlier in the evening, Jean Smart also broke a record. Smart was awarded the prize for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the fifth consecutive year for “Hacks.” She is the only woman to have won the award for every season of a television series.

What a journey it has been, said Smart from the stage.

This year's award is the 75-year-old's eighth Emmy, tying her for the record for most statuettes won by an actor. Allison Janney also joined the group that includes Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

In the category for best entertainment program, “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” took home an expected statuette for its final season. The host has long been critical of President Donald Trump, but CBS says financial reasons were behind the cancellation of the long-running show earlier this year.

"I want to thank so many people in this room. Over the last 21 years, I've interviewed at least a thousand of you. Thank you for coming and talking to this idiot," Colbert said in his acceptance speech.
