In the book “Great and Unfortunate Things,” Arday writes that he could barely speak until the age of eleven and learned to write at 18. He became the youngest black professor in Cambridge’s history.

But both his stories about his upbringing and his academic credentials came into question over the summer. Several universities were criticised for not having sufficiently reviewed his qualifications.

The book is being published in the UK two weeks after Arday's death, in accordance with the wishes of his survivors.
