Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi dissolved Japan's parliament on Friday, ahead of new elections on February 8.

Takaichi announced her intentions on Monday and now hopes the government's strong approval ratings will lead her otherwise-unpopular ruling party to victory.

The ruling coalition, which includes Takaichi's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the Japan Innovation Party (JIP), currently has only a narrow majority in the lower house.
