Japan's new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has reportedly rejected US President Donald Trump's demand to stop buying Russian energy, Reuters reports, citing anonymous sources.

According to sources to the news agency, the newly appointed Prime Minister told Trump during Tuesday's meeting that it will be difficult to stop buying Russian gas. Ahead of their meeting, Donald Trump is said to have demanded that several countries, including Japan, stop buying oil and gas from Russia.

Japan currently imports about 9 percent of its gas from Russia. In recent years, the country has increased its gas imports from the United States, in an attempt to reduce its dependence on Australian gas.
