A 75-year-old woman has been arrested in Japan after she admitted to having had her dead daughter in the freezer for two decades.

The investigators found the body in a freezer box on Tuesday, after the mother went into a police station in the prefecture of Ibaraki to report the matter. The daughter was in a kneeling position in the box, according to an anonymous police spokesperson.

According to the spokesperson, the deceased was born in 1975 and would have been in her 50s today if she were alive. An autopsy will now try to determine the cause of death.

The 75-year-old has stated that she bought the freezer box after her daughter's body began to smell bad. She is now suspected of having "abandoned a body".
