Japan summons US ambassador after Marine arrested in killing of Japanese woman

A US Marine has been arrested in Japan on suspicion of murdering a 39-year-old Japanese woman. Japan has summoned the US ambassador to Tokyo, and the country's prime minister has called the killing "exceptionally brutal."

The incident has contributed to rising tensions between the two countries, and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has called on the United States to fully assist in the investigation.

The suspected murder occurred on Saturday in the city of Naha in Okinawa Prefecture, where the US has a military base. Surveillance footage shows a foreign man accompanying the woman to a hotel and later leaving the building with her belongings.

The US military presence on Okinawa has drawn criticism from local residents, particularly in connection with criminal offences. Last year, a Marine was sentenced to seven years in prison for the attempted rape of a Japanese woman.
