21.5 million tourists meant an increase of 21 percent from the previous year, according to official figures.

Only in June, 3.4 million tourists were recorded, which in itself is a record for the month.

Among other things, the increase is due to more visitors from China, South Korea, Singapore, India, the USA and Germany. The number of tourists from Hong Kong decreased significantly, however. As a result of rumors about an impending major earthquake in Japan, tourism from there plummeted by just over 33 percent.

Japan's government has set an ambitious goal of reaching 60 million annual visitors by 2030.

Just like in other parts of the world, however, not everyone is satisfied with the visitors. In cities such as Kyoto, complaints about the increased mass tourism are growing.
