The conservative China critic Sanae Takaichi has been elected in the Japanese lower house to the country's first female prime minister.

64-year-old Sanae Takaichi will formally take up her new post after meeting the emperor later on Tuesday.

On Monday, Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party LDP and the smaller right-wing party Nippon Ishin signed a coalition agreement that paved the way for Sanae Takaichi as prime minister.

I look very much forward to working with you to strengthen Japan's economy and shape Japan as a country that can take responsibility for future generations, said Takaichi to Nippon Ishin's party leader Hirofumi Yoshimura when the coalition agreement was signed.
