This is the first time since measurements began in 1963 that the number of centenarians has exceeded 100,000. Around 90 percent of the country's centenarians are women.
Japan has the second-oldest population in the world, with a median age of 49.9 years; only Monaco is higher.
In addition, the country is struggling with low birth rates, which are leading to a shortage of labour and skyrocketing social security costs.
