Japan's government has approved a record-breaking defense budget for the coming year.

The budget corresponds to just over 531 billion SEK and will include an investment in cruise missiles.

The budget marks the fourth year of an ongoing Japanese five-year program to increase defense spending and is a 9.4 percent increase from 2025.

The focus on defense comes amid increased tensions in the region. Among other things, relations with China have deteriorated following statements by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Japan's defense of Taiwan in the event of a military conflict.

The Japanese government has also been under pressure from the United States to increase its defense budget.
