The two ministers spoke by telephone to discuss security in Japan's region, according to a statement from the government in Tokyo.
"The ministers expressed serious concern about any actions that increase regional tensions as China's actions do not contribute to regional peace and stability."
Japan's Defense Minister has previously called China's actions "dangerous and extremely regrettable" and stated that the government has lodged a "strong protest" to China.
Relations between China and Japan have recently deteriorated, after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made statements about Japanese military intervention in the event of a possible Chinese attack on Taiwan.
