Author and illustrator Janosch, whose real name was Horst Eckert, has died in Tenerife, according to several German media outlets. He was known for the 1978 children's book "Our Dreamland: A Tale of How the Little Bear and the Little Tiger Travel to Panama."

He died on November 3, his publisher confirmed to the German news agency dpa, according to Die Welt.

Since the 1970s, Horst Eckert had written and illustrated more than 300 children's books, novels and plays. Among them was the 1978 children's book "Our Dreamland: A Tale of How the Little Bear and the Little Tiger Travel to Panama."

The characters Little Tiger, Little Bear and Tiger Duck became internationally famous and featured in many children's upbringings. Janosch has described how his themes of challenging adult authority were an antidote to his own experiences of a violent, religious and poor childhood.
