Jannik Sinner advances to the round of 16 in the US Open in tennis after the victory against Denis Shapovalov in the third round.

Very tough match today. I knew I had to play at a very high level today, so I'm very happy that I managed to win, says Sinner in the interview after the match.

The world number one started the match weakly. In the first set, Sinner was behind with both 1–4 and 2–5. He then shifted up, but lost the first set with 5–7.

It became even in the second set, but Sinner began to find the pace and won with 6–4. Then it rolled on for the 24-year-old. He won set three and four with 6–3 and 6–4, respectively, and thus won with 3–1 in sets against Shapovalov, who is ranked 29th in the world.

It's always incredible to step out onto the court here, this is the biggest stage we have in our sport, so I'm very happy to be able to play here on this beautiful site, says Sinner.

Sinner is the reigning champion in the US Open – in 2024 he won the final against Taylor Fritz in three straight sets.
