Jannik Sinner stepped into the US Open and had no problem dismissing the unseeded Czech Vit Kopriva. The Italian won easily with 3–0 in sets (6–1, 6–1, 6–2) despite the last week's troubled preparation.

Sinner has had a tough buildup to the tournament and was forced to interrupt the final in Cincinnati Open against rival Carlos Alcaraz after becoming ill.

It feels good to be back. I'm glad I'm healthy again and I've done my best to be in the best shape here, said Sinner in the victory interview.

Now the Italian, who has already won the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year, hopes to be the first since 2008 to win the US Open two years in a row. That time it was Roger Federer who took home the tournament for five whole years (2004-2008) in a row.

Also advancing from her first match was the Pole Iga Swiatek, who defeated the Colombian Emiliana Arango 2-0 in sets (6-1, 6-2). The world number two won Wimbledon this summer and has previously won the US Open - 2022.
