The prize, which is awarded to an artist whose music has had "an undeniable cultural and global influence on the music industry", has only been given out twice before, to Rihanna in 2013 and Lionel Richie in 2022, reports Billboard.

Little sister Jackson, who has won eleven AMA awards over the years, will also perform at the gala, which will be her first TV appearance since 2018 gala takes place on May 26 in Las Vegas and is hosted this year by Jennifer Lopez, who will also perform.

Janet Jackson has been a major music star in the USA since her debut album was released in 1982 and has been awarded several icon prizes before. She received the Ultimate Icon Award at the Black Entertainment Television Awards in 2015, the Icon Award at the Billboard Music Awards in 2018, and the Global Icon Award at the MTV EMA in 2018.

She has also won five Grammys, a Golden Globe, and been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
