Jan Scherman is the recipient of the year of Torgny Segerstedt's freedom pen. He receives the prize for his "persistent and significant struggle for democracy and classical journalistic ideals", as it is stated among other things in the motivation.

The journalist Jan Scherman was program director at TV4 and later CEO of the TV4 group between 2001 and 2011. Before that, Scherman worked as a reporter and program host at SVT and TV4.

During his time at SVT, Scherman received the Grand Journalism Prize in 1989 together with Göran Ellung for his examination of the Jas Gripen project. Scherman has continued to engage in the social debate and produced the documentary film "Make democracy great again" last year.

The Freedom Pen has been awarded by the Torgny Segerstedt Memorial Foundation since 1996. Among previous winners are, among others, Gellert Tamas, Cecilia Uddén, Åsne Seierstad and Hédi Fried.
