The journalist Jan Scherman was program director at TV4 and subsequently CEO of the TV4 group between 2001 and 2011. Before that, Scherman worked as a reporter and program host at SVT and TV4.
During his time at SVT, Scherman received in 1989, together with Göran Ellung, the Grand Journalism Prize for his examination of the Jas Gripen project. Scherman has continued to engage in the social debate and produced a documentary film "Make democracy great again" last year.
The Freedom Pen has been awarded by the Torgny Segerstedt Memorial Foundation since 1996. Among previous award winners are, among others, Gellert Tamas, Cecilia Uddén, Åsne Seierstad and Hédi Fried. This year's award will be presented on November 1.
