Two future films in the "Avatar" universe have already been scheduled for release in 2029 and 2031, but successful director Cameron, who is behind the film series, is not entirely sure that the fourth and fifth films will be produced.
"I don't know if the story continues after this. I hope it does," he said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
The first “Avatar” came out in 2009 and is the highest-grossing film of all time. The sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water” came out in 2022 and is the third. It is these successes that the new “Avatar: Fire and Ash”, which premiered in early December, has to compete with.
If the next two films are scrapped for some reason, he promises to hold a press conference about where the story is going instead. Cameron dreams of writing books about the “Avatar” universe himself.
"There's so much culture, backstory, and detail around these characters that's already been worked out. I would love to do something at that level of detail," he says.
