The reigning Olympic champions from Italy once again showed why they are the world's best. Turkey was defeated in the World Championship final in volleyball and Italy secured its first World Championship gold in 23 years.

The final became a drama where Turkey managed to equalize to 2–2 in sets and had the grip before the decisive tiebreaker set. There, however, Italy took back command and won with 15–8.

Italy thus continues its impressive streak. The country has not lost since June 1 last year, a streak of 463 days.

For Turkey, the final was nonetheless historic. The reigning European Champions took their first World Championship medal ever.

Sweden was eliminated in the group stage of the tournament after losses to the Netherlands and Thailand followed by a meaningless win against Egypt.

The World Championship in Thailand was the first World Championship the Swedish women's volleyball team played.
