The Hague-based court expressed diplomatic anger over the suspect's release, according to Italy due to a technicality. The ICC reminded Italy that the country must "fully cooperate" with the court and awaited further information about what had actually happened.
The accused Osama Najim is believed to have been responsible for, among other things, the Mitiga prison outside the capital Tripoli since 2015. Detainees were subjected to torture, rape, sexual abuse, or killed, according to the ICC. The charges also include crimes against humanity.
The suspect was arrested on Sunday after attending a football match in Turin, Italy. The ICC was aware that Najim, also known as Almasri, was in Europe and informed, among others, Italy about his travels. He was released on Tuesday.
