The reason was that fireworks and seats began to be thrown from Salernitana supporters in the stands, after Sampdoria's 2–0 goal.
The goal took Sampdoria to a total lead of 4–0.
Now the club from Genoa is expected to be awarded a 3–0 win in the second meeting as a result of Sunday's scandal. This would give the team a 5–0 win over both meetings, and thus make Sampdoria stay in the second-highest division in Italy.
Salernitana, which played in Serie A in the 2023/2024 season, will likely play in Serie C next season.
The decisive qualifying match also had to be moved from Friday to Sunday, after several players and coaches in Salernitana needed hospital care due to severe food poisoning.
