At the beginning of August, Italy paused Schengen cooperation with Spain and introduced stricter border controls after more than 70,000 migrants made their way from Morocco to the Spanish exclave of Ceuta.

The extension is being carried out despite the fact that only around 5,000 migrants remain in Ceuta, but the Italian government writes in a statement that the measure is necessary as "the high risk to internal security remains, in addition to a potential threat related to possible infiltration by terrorists."
