After several months of debate, parliament approved the new law by 227 votes to 164.
The change in the law aims to strengthen Italy’s political system, supporters say. It will also benefit voters by requiring parties and coalitions to clearly present their government programs and name their prime ministerial candidate “well in advance of the election.”
But the opposition calls it a “sham law” that will make it easier for Meloni’s right-wing coalition to win elections. The opposition also claims that the law violates the constitution and has promised to take the matter to the constitutional court as soon as it comes into force.
