The Italian rally talent Matteo Doretto has died in an accident. He became 21 years old.
Doretto was to participate in the part competition of the European Championship in rally (ERC) in Poland, and was in the country to train before the competition.
During a test before the competition, the 21-year-old drove off the track and crashed. His co-driver Samuele Pellegrino was taken to hospital but escaped unharmed.
Doretto was seen as a great talent in rally. In May, he became third in the junior European Championship, and he was the reigning champion in the Italian junior championships. Doretto made his first season on ERC, and was fourth-ranked among juniors.
"With his incredible potential, Matteo was polite, engaging, but above all humble", writes the motorsport association in a statement.
The European Championship in rally in Poland is taking place 13–15 June.
