The 71-year-old actor, screenwriter, and director was taken to a hospital in Rome, where he was operated on and is now in the intensive care unit.

Moretti, considered one of the country's leading directors, is often called "Italy's Woody Allen" due to his many autobiographical films, where he likes to mix humor and social criticism. He also often appears in his own films.

Moretti achieved international breakthrough with "Dear Diary" in 1994, and was awarded the Golden Palm in 2001 for "A Room in Our Hearts" – which deals with a couple whose son dies. In "The Caiman – The Revenge of the B-Movie Maker", he directed harsh criticism at the former Prime Minister and media mogul Silvio Berlusconi.

Last year, Moretti suffered a heart attack, according to La Stampa, from which he recovered.
