A political disaster of this kind has never happened before in Israel's history, Lapid writes on social media.
"Israel was not even close to the table when decisions were made that concern the core of our national security," the opposition leader writes.
“The army did everything asked of it, and the public showed remarkable resilience, but Netanyahu failed politically, failed strategically, and did not achieve any of the goals he set for himself.”
Harsh criticism has also come from other leading Israeli opposition politicians, from left to right.
"This is a complete failure that endangers Israel's security for many years to come," writes left-wing leader Yair Golan on X.
Former Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, who leads the secular right-wing Yisrael Beiteinu party, believes that the ceasefire gives Iran an opportunity to regroup. On X, Liberman writes that Israel will have to resume the war later and then risks paying a “higher price.”
