The government voted on Sunday in a vote of no confidence against Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara.
The vote was held two days after the government dismissed the head of the internal security service Shin Bet, Ronan Bar. The decision was rejected by Israel's Supreme Court, and Attorney General Baharav-Miara announced at the same time that the government is not allowed to appoint a replacement.
Baharav-Miara has on several previous occasions opposed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government on legal issues – which has led to great irritation from the government.
The reason given for the vote of no confidence was the Attorney General's "inappropriate behavior and the prolonged disagreements between the government and the government's legal adviser".
In connection with the vote in the cabinet, hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem in protest.
