A group of Israeli settlers has entered Syria. The goal is said to have been to establish an Israeli outpost.

The settlers – described by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz as right-wing activists – crossed the border by sawing through the fences with a chainsaw on Thursday.

After a car chase, the Israeli military was able to arrest the group's members, who reportedly stated that they intended to create an Israeli settlement in Syria.

The military said in a statement that they "strongly condemn" the incident.
