In total, 21 people have been killed in Israeli airstrikes against the city of Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, according to Mahmud Bassal, spokesperson for the civil defense in Gaza, to AFP.
Among other things, a tent and a house were hit during the night against Sunday. Five men, five women, and five children were killed, according to Nasser Hospital, which received the bodies.
One of the dead was a female journalist.
My daughter is innocent. She was not involved, she loved journalism and idolized it, says her mother.
Killed outside bakery
Four people were killed in an Israeli attack on a refugee camp in Jabalia in northern Gaza Strip, according to the Hamas-controlled health department. Another seven dead bodies were taken to al-Aqsa Hospital in Dayr al-Balah, according to an AP reporter on site.
In Gaza City, people were hit while standing and waiting outside a bakery. At least six people, including three children, were killed, according to the civil defense.
Of the approximately ten rockets fired from the Gaza Strip on Sunday evening, most were shot down by Israel's air defense, according to a statement from the military.
Debris from a downed rocket fell in the city of Ashkelon in southwestern Israel, and a man was injured by shrapnel, according to the Israeli healthcare system.
Hamas' armed branch, the al-Qassam brigades, has taken responsibility for the attacks, according to The Jerusalem Post.
Rocket launcher destroyed
That so many rockets are fired in such a short time is unusual, as Hamas' ability to launch rockets has been weakened in the war.
"The Prime Minister has given the order for a powerful response," writes Benjamin Netanyahu's office in a statement.
Netanyahu, who is on his way to the US to meet President Donald Trump on Monday, is said to have called Defense Minister Israel Katz from the plane.
The rocket attack was followed by an evacuation order and a warning of an impending airstrike from the Israeli military to residents of the city of Deir el-Balah in central Gaza Strip. Shortly afterwards, the military announced that the rocket launcher believed to have been used had been destroyed.
