Israeli President Urges Party Leaders to Accept Election Results and Avoid Snap Vote

The rival political sides in Israel must accept the election results and do what they can to avoid a snap election, President Isaac Herzog says.

It is time to tell the party leaders: “Stop climbing trees and face reality,” Herzog said at a state memorial ceremony on Sunday evening, Times of Israel reports.

The president added that politicians are welcome to come to him starting Wednesday to move forward with government formation.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition was slightly larger than the opposition coalition led by Gadi Eisenkot in Tuesday’s election, but neither bloc has a majority. This means that the Arab-Israeli opposition could hold the balance of power, but so far neither side has said it is willing to invite the parties.
