Israeli Military Ends Hebron Offensive and Withdraws Troops

Israel says it has ended its military offensive in Hebron, in the occupied West Bank. The operation was launched in response to the killing of two Israeli soldiers in October.

Israeli soldiers withdrew from the area where the operation was carried out on Monday morning, a military spokesman said, adding that “counter-terrorism operations” continue in the West Bank.

AFP journalists reported that residents were returning to Hebron. During the operation, a residential area was reportedly cleared, forcing more than 3,000 people to leave their homes.

Two Palestinians who shot and killed two Israeli soldiers near Hebron on October 23, just days before the Israeli elections, lived in the residential area that had been cleared. The two men were shot dead by the Israeli military, which shortly afterward launched a major revenge offensive in Hebron.
