The attacks were directed at the Nabatieh area in southern Lebanon. In pictures taken by AFP, thick smoke columns are seen rising towards the sky.
Lebanese authorities confirm "violent" Israeli attacks that were not preceded by any warning, writes the news agency EFE.
Lebanon's state news agency NNA reports that Israeli fighter jets have fired several projectiles and that the material damage in the area is extensive. Several fires are said to have broken out.
Israel's military claims that the attacks were launched after Hezbollah positions with "military activity" were discovered.
Despite the fact that Israel and the Shia militia Hezbollah agreed to a ceasefire in November last year, Israel has continued to repeatedly bomb targets in Lebanon, mainly in the southern parts but also in the capital Beirut. Israel also has several positions left in southern Lebanon, in contravention of the agreement.
After pressure from the USA, the Lebanese government has promised to ensure that Hezbollah, which for decades has controlled large parts of southern Lebanon, is disarmed. Hezbollah has however refused to lay down its arms.
