Emergency Aid Trucks Enter Gaza for First Time in Nearly Three Months

Several trucks have entered Gaza with emergency aid – the first in nearly three months. The news comes after the World Health Organization (WHO) has alerted that two million Gazans are starving. Following Israel's announcement that it will take control over the entire Gaza Strip, Western countries are threatening with sanctions.

According to the UN, nine trucks, including baby food, have been given the green light to enter Gaza via Kerem Shalom in southern Israel on Monday.

"But it's a drop in the ocean of what is acutely needed," says Tom Fletcher, head of the UN's humanitarian coordination organization Ocha, in a statement.

It is the first aid to be let into Gaza since Israel's blockade began on March 2. Before the war, hundreds of trucks with food, medicine, and other necessities crossed the border daily.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said earlier in the day that two million Gazans are starving, with "tons of food blocked, just minutes away.

Minimal aid

The statement came shortly after Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opened up to letting in a smaller amount of aid to Gaza's population – for "diplomatic reasons". "Israel's friends" do not tolerate images of mass starvation, he says in a pre-recorded speech.

The decision on "minimal" aid appears directly linked to Netanyahu's parallel announcement that Israel, which on Sunday launched a major ground offensive, will take control of" the entire Gaza Strip.

In a joint statement, France, Canada, and the UK threaten "concrete actions", including sanctions, unless Israel stops its new offensive and lets in more aid.

A "huge reward" to Hamas, Netanyahu responds to the demands.

During the day, mass evacuations were ordered for Khan Yunis, west towards al-Mawasi. The area around the metropolis will be a "dangerous combat zone", according to the military.

The Prime Minister claims that the battles are intense and successful, and that Israel must "act in a way that cannot be stopped".

Long blockade

Israel has blocked aid shipments to Gaza since March 2. According to the country, to put pressure on terrorist-stamped Hamas, which governs Gaza and whose large-scale attack on Israel in 2023 triggered the war.

The UN and aid organizations have repeatedly warned of unimaginable suffering among the civilian population and that food and medicine stocks are depleted.

On Sunday, over 140 people were killed in Gaza, and on Monday, over 91 have been killed, mainly in airstrikes, according to the civil defense in the Hamas-governed area.

In Khan Yunis, attacks have been carried out on Nasser Hospital and a school that sheltered children who were forced to leave their homes.
