The measure is “in accordance with the ceasefire agreement and the directives of the political leadership,” the Israeli authority Cogat stated , according to The Times of Israel .
According to the Israeli statement, Palestinians will be able to leave Gaza via the crossing in coordination with Egypt, after security approval by Israel and with the assistance of an EU delegation.
Egypt, however, denies that any agreement has been reached to allow Gazans to travel across the border. An official told state-affiliated Al Qahera News that such an agreement would have to mean that the border would be open to traffic in both directions.
The Rafah border crossing was closed when Israeli forces invaded the area in May 2024. It was briefly opened in February this year, then only to allow the evacuation of a number of sick and injured Palestinians for treatment outside the Gaza Strip.
On Tuesday, Doctors Without Borders stated that at least 16,500 Palestinians are estimated to need medical care outside the Gaza Strip.
There is still no information on when Palestinians who left Gaza as a result of the war will be allowed to return.
