Trump's call was posted on his messaging service Truth Social shortly after 5:30 a.m. U.S. time on Monday. In a separate post, the president said that "both sides, Israel and Iran, are aiming to implement an immediate ceasefire."

After less than an hour, Iran responded, according to state media, that the country would not attack Israel again, but said the promise applies only if Israel also silences its weapons against Lebanon.

Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised statement on Monday that attacks have been temporarily halted between Israel and Iran after Israel struck Iranian targets.

But Netanyahu added that new attacks with "full force" will follow if the country is attacked again, and that operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon will continue.

First in two months

The hope is therefore that the ceasefire that has formally been in effect since April 8 will hold again, after a day of intense attacks.

The escalation began when Israel launched a deadly attack on Beirut's southern suburbs on Sunday.

Iran, which is allied with the Hezbollah movement in Lebanon, responded by firing missiles at Israel.

These were the first attacks by Iran on Israel since the ceasefire agreement two months ago. However, there have been numerous exchanges of fire between the United States and Iran, which have also affected other countries around the Persian Gulf.

The attacks continued on Monday with Israel bombing Karun, a large petrochemical facility tens of miles from Iran's border with Iraq.

War for 100 days

Around the same time, air-raid warnings were sounded in Israel after alerts that Iran had fired missiles. Explosions were heard in the sky as Israeli air defenses tried to stop the projectiles.

An Israeli spokesman told the AFP news agency that Iran had fired around 30 missiles in total.

Israel and the Yemeni Houthi movement, which is allied with Iran, also said that a missile from Yemen was aimed at Israeli targets.

The drama culminated as the war on Monday marked 100 days. No more definitive calm seems in sight, even though Trump claims in his posts that “final negotiations for ‘peace’ are continuing, barring any ignorance or stupidity that may get in the way.”
